The Santa Cruz Neighbourhood

Santa Cruz is the most famous neighbourhood of central, and the former bustling Jewish quarter of the medieval city.

It is the most picturesque and delightful part of the city, with narrow winding cobbled streets and whitewashed houses, where you can sit outside a bar, enjoy some tapas and watch the world goes by, or wander through centuries-old gardens and relax on beautiful tiled benches.

Further away past the Cathedral, you will find also a lot of interesting monuments and plazas, such as the Plaza Nueva, that can be compared to the typical Plaza Mayor, the main square that is to be found in any Spanish city. The main monument of the square is the Town Hall, the Ayuntamiento, built in the 16th century in Renaissance style on the remains of the former San Francisco monastery.

The Avenida de la Constitución is one of the neighbourhoods of Seville that has recently changed the most. A few years ago, cars were still allowed to drive on that avenue. Nevertheless, the avenue became a pedestrian street, being now an extension of the commercial area and unifying it with the historic part of the town. Along this avenue are the most famous monuments of Seville, such as the Cathedral, the Giralda, and the Archivo de Indias, which contains valuable documents from the archives of the colonies in the Americas.

The Plaza de La Campana is the numerical center of the city, which means that the numbering of the streets of Seville starts from this area. It was named Campana (the Bell) because of a bell that used to be in one of the buildings of the square.
