The Arenal Neighbourhood

El Arenal is an area that used to be the old port of Seville where ammunitions and artillery were stored.

It is the area where bullfighting is widely celebrated. It is lying between the Guadalquivir and the old Jewish Quarter, Santa Cruz , to the east.

Its name comes from the sandy nature that this east bank of the river once used to have. El Arenal has a history characterized by its former position as port of Seville, until river silting forced the city to relocate the port to the southern edge of the city.

Some of the historical sites in the neighbourhood are:

The Torre del Oro, a 13th Century Moorish watchtower. This tower used to be united to the Reales Alcázares by a wall and had a steel chain that would cross the river Guadalquivir to prevent enemies? ships from entering the port.

La Plaza de Toros, Seville's bullring and the second most important in Spain, after the Plaza de Toros in Madrid. The bullfighting season runs from April to September.
